Mixing & Matching Patterns

Let’s be honest, we have all wondered, “Does this really go together?” Mixing and matching patterns can be an intimidating idea, however, if done properly it can add a level of sophistication to your outfit. Depending on what overall look you want to achieve it’s a great way to have some fun with your wardrobe and create many different looks using the same pieces. The rule of thumb is really pretty simple: Mixing the pattern:size ratio is what will guide you. For example: When wearing a suit with a large windowpane type pattern, you can certainly pair that new checkered shirt you just bought and wear it together. Make sure the pattern on the shirt is considerably SMALLER. This concept works with just about any clothing item or accessory. Another example, you can wear that favorite solid navy “power suit” to your next meeting and pair it with a tight pinstripe patterned shirt and finish it off with a diagonal striped tie so long as the size of the stripes between the shirt and tie are different. You don’t want to be causing any optical illusions! So go ahead, change it up a bit, mix those patterns and textures. Just keep in mind, the size:pattern ratio will always keep you looking like a real pro instead of creating an outfit that will make your peers dizzy at the sight of you.
